The program covers the interpersonal skills required for mentors and the planning and processes of mentoring. It contains a number of activities to practise mentoring skills. On completion of the workshop, mentors should be able to plan and organise mentoring relationships and assist mentees to develop and improve. Sport and Recreation delivers the Mentor Training Program on a regular basis throughout the year. Sport and Recreation conducts workshops throughout the year on issues relevant to community level coaches and officials.

Workshop topics are based on current issues and industry need. The National Coaching Accreditation Scheme is an initiative of the Australian Sports Commission and is a progressive coach education program offering courses at various levels. The program covers more than 70 sports, and it is recommended all coaches become accredited though the scheme.

Accredited coaches will have met a minimum standard of competence which is recognised by national and state sporting organisations and the ASC. Contact your national sporting organisation for information on how to become an accredited coach. As a first step towards accreditation, courses have been developed by the ASC and cover aspects of coaching common to all sports. Your national or state sporting organisation can provide more information on the specific requirements needed to achieve NCAS accreditation.

Aimed at the new or first time coach with no previous coaching experience and specifically those working with children. The course consists of 5 modules which take approximately hours to complete and is available online.

Successful Sports Officiating: Officiating Style

The pre-season is a time to envision and build team culture. During this phase, successful coaches review the core values and coaching philosophy that will guide their work, and together with their athletes set realistic but challenging goals. The Off-Season is the phase when successful coaches work diligently to Enhance their coaching and their program. Although the Off-Season is a time to recharge, the most successful coaches balance rest and recovery with deliberate learning designed to close high impact performance gaps.
